Sonali Bank Limited, the largest commercial bank in Bangladesh, is owned by Bangladesh. According to the Bangladesh Bankex (Nationalization) Order 1972, President's Ordinance No. 26, 1972, 'Sonali Bank' was established with National Bank of Pakistan, Bank of Bahwalpur and Premier Bank. In order to make banking activities more dynamic, the Directorate of Registered Registrar of Companies and Firms, registered the company named "Sonali Bank Limited" on June 03, 2007, and on 5 June 2007, by the Bangladesh Bank to grant banking license in favor of Sonali Bank Limited. After the government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and Sonali Bank Ltd. After committing "vendor agreement" in the sub-contract, from 15 November 2007, Sonali Bank started banking activities as a limited company.

As well as promoting bank business as well as encouraging investment of the people of the country and for the development of strong economic development, the merchant banking business was started on 14 September 2009 after the formation of a subsidiary company called "Sonali Investment Limited".

Shari'ah-based Islamic banking activities have been started through Islamic banking window in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Khulna and Bogra from 29th June, 2010. Moreover, corporate Social Responsibility is being implemented through the formation of "Sonali Foundation".

The number of branches of Sonali Bank Limited is 1211. Of these, there are 1209 in the country and 2 branches in the country. Out of 1209 branches in the country, 743 are in rural areas and 466 in urban areas. Foreign trade operations were conducted through 45 branches (Authorized Dealer or Edi Branch) in all branches. Among the two branches in the country, one in Kolkata and one in Siliguri in West Bengal, India. There are 11 General Manager's Offices, 46 Principal Offices and 16 Regional Offices for the proper functioning of the bank's administrative and business operations. The overall activities of the bank are being conducted through 45 departments of the head office. There are more than 1.25 crore different types of customer accounts in Sonali Bank.

There is no alternative to training for the officers and employees of the bank. There are 1 training institute in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Bogra and Mymensingh, including "Sonali Bank Staff College" in Dhaka for training.

In 1994, a full subsidiaries company, called the Sony Exchange Company Inc (SECI), was set up in the United States to expand the activities of Sonali Bank Limited in the international banking area. There are 9 branches in the exchange company's own fund.

Since 2001, the activities of Sonali Bank Limited (UK) Ltd in the UK have been started in the joint ownership of Sonali Bank Limited and the People's Republic of Bangladesh. Currently there are 6 branches in the UK.

Saudi Arabia has its own representative office in Riyadh and Jeddah and Kuwait. Bangladeshi workers from Malaysia are coming to the country with the help of Sonali Bank Limited through 'May Bank' and IME (M) SDN, BHD of Malaysia. In no branch, payment of Remittance of WESTERN UNION, IME, TRANSFAST, EXPRESS MONEY, remittance of SPOT CASH, CASH OVERT THE COUNTER and other bank / EXCHANGE HOUSE is paid. Sonali Bank has remittance business with 55 banks and exchange houses in different countries including the Middle East. For foreign trade 45 foreign branches of the bank and 617 foreign correspondents in different countries of the world are operating abroad.

The bank has a large number of skilled manpower. As well as the development of the bank business with this manpower, our goal is to make the country's economic activity dynamic. At present Sonali Bank Limited has a total of 18,806 officers and employees. Of them, the number of officials is 17,406 and the number of employees is 1400.
